about

The new EP 'things I should have said a year ago' is Otis Mensah's first self-produced project laying out a 7-song exploration of loss, grief and the feeling of being weathered by time drenched in sonic and conceptual juxtaposition with bubblegum melodies, dreamlike depictions of melancholy and surrealist imagery. With its minimalist-jazz tones and a mellow sonic overcast, this piece of work highlights Otis' signature free-form abstract-rap cadences filled with poetry of blues.

The first single 'Black Box' spearheads with tender expression & radical honesty exhibiting the projects underlying mantra—that our human-experience of shame, loneliness & fear of abandonment can be adorned in rituals of song. This concept is reignited once again in 'Aurora Borealis' that sees Otis accompany themselves on the piano for a ballad of ominous poetry and thrilleresque trepidation.

As a musician and artist from the North of England outside the London echo-chamber, Otis presents as an important outlier amidst the landscape of abstract rap from British voices.
